Without support from the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sports (Conade), the Mexican artistic swimming team traveled to Soma Bay, Egypt, where they won gold medals in the Technical Team and Acrobatic events at the World Cup of the discipline.

In addition, Nuria Diosdado and Joana Jiménez took first place in the Women’s Free Duet event and fourth place in the Women’s Technical Duet, while Itzamary González and Diego Villalobos achieved bronze in the Mixed Free Duet event.

Conade suspended support to athletes due to alleged irregularities in the Mexican Swimming Federation, so the team resorted to selling swimsuits and towels to fund their trip.

They were able to cover the total cost of their participation with the assistance of businessmen Carlos Slim and Arturo Elías Ayub.

The Mexican Olympic Committee and the federal government congratulated the athletes, which was criticized by users who denounced the lack of support.
