After being exposed by the residents of Santa María Chi as a highly polluting company, the Porcine Group San Gerardo has resorted to intimidation, even having the audacity to sue the commissioner of the town for alleged “property damage.”
Despite this situation, the peaceful protest continues, but the neighbors felt compelled to let the trucks pass out of safety and fear of reprisals.
The State Investigation Police (PEI) notified the commissioner, Wilberth Nahuat Puc, that a complaint has been filed against him for kidnapping the farm workers, which is entirely false, as the demonstrators allowed them to enter their workplace, and it was the employees themselves who chose to stay there, perhaps under orders from their superiors.
And so, they have remained barricaded, not allowing authorities to enter either. First, it was the personnel from the Municipality of Mérida, and yesterday it was the officials from the Ministry of Sustainable Development.
The closure of 23rd Street was only to prevent heavy vehicles from entering, which they ultimately did yesterday, causing serious damage to the asphalt and roads in the town, which are not designed for the passage of these vehicles.
The residents of Santa María Chi continue to stand firm in their struggle and have been sharing images of the evident pollution caused by the Porcine Group San Gerardo, as well as the burned areas. A photo of the mistreatment of the pigs when they are loaded onto trucks has also been circulated.
Furthermore, for the third consecutive day, the indifference of the Municipality of Mérida and Mayor Renán Barrera Concha regarding the case has been evident. A comment about the issue was even hidden on the mayor’s social media accounts.
The Facebook account Santa María Chi 2021-2024 wrote: “We hope they come to solve our health problem,” emphasizing the urgency and severity of the situation faced by its residents.
The request was made in a post by the mayor about the Anikabil linear park. The following day, it was no longer visible, but other comments that Renán Barrera’s profile did take the time to respond to remained.
