This was announced by the head of the INAH Center in Yucatán, Arturo Chab Cárdenas, who stated that after almost a month of work descending into the underground, the researchers have discovered the body of water located just three meters below the surface.

“The evidence has already been found, and now we are cleaning the well, which was covered at the beginning of the 20th century to build a street,” he expressed.

He pointed out that the location of this cenote is part of a project that includes the study of various bodies of water, as well as the system used to supply water to the entire town.

“There is a very interesting project that falls within the scope of this subdirectorate’s work, which is to find bodies of water and study them. In the case of Izamal, eight bodies of water have been analyzed, and some of them contain cultural material,” he said.

He indicated that the objective of locating and studying these cenotes is to include them within an interpretive area to learn about the importance of water in Maya culture and contemporary culture.

The federal official stated that descents into the underground body of water are temporarily suspended because, after its discovery through a well within the same convent, they realized that it contains dangerous gases that can affect the divers’ bodies during immersion.
