It is now prohibited by law in the city of New York to discriminate based on height or weight against any person in employment, housing, or public places.
“No one should be discriminated against based on their height and weight. We all deserve equal access to employment, housing, and public spaces, regardless of our appearance,” stated Eric Adams, the mayor of the city, upon signing the document.
Shawn Abreu, the council member who promoted the initiative, argued that this type of discrimination is a social justice issue and a threat to public health.
“People with different body types are denied access to job opportunities and equal wages, and they have had no legal recourse to challenge it. Moreover, millions are taught to hate their bodies,” he claimed.
Despite this, the law includes certain exceptions for jobs that require physical exertion, such as firefighters.
