MÉRIDA, Yucatan.- On June 4, 2023, the State Institute of Transparency, Access to Information and Protection of Personal Data (“INAIP”) held a rally to celebrate the 19th anniversary of the enactment of the first state law of transparency in Yucatan, which guaranteed the right of people to ask questions to the authorities.
Gilda María Segovia Chab, president commissioner of the Institute, pointed out that this event is not only to commemorate but also to make visible the work of this organism because there are still many people who do not know that the Inaip is the body that guarantees their right to know and protects their data.
He mentioned that, with the enactment of this state law, which took place on a day like today, but in 2004, practices in which the authorities did not respond to issues of interest were eliminated. “Before you would go to ask the authority about any subject and they would ignore you or not answer you, even, we did not conceive that we could access public information”.
“Public information has the obligated subjects, that is, it is not their property, those who are owners of the information are the citizens. We all have the freedom to access the information whenever we decide thanks to this law that enshrines the right of access to information”, he commented.
Segovia Chab pointed out that this event, which was called En bici por la transparencia en Yucatán, was carried out thanks to a joint work with the obligated subject, which is the City Hall of Merida, where not only personnel from the institute and the municipality participate, but also from the Executive Branch and the Citizen Participation Committee.
He explained that the ride began at the Remate de Paseo de Montejo, towards the Monumento a la Patria, and then returned to the starting point, where there was an Inaip module, where they were promoting the work that can be done by the institution for the benefit of the Yucatecans who require it.
“This law came to consolidate the recognition and guarantee of access to public information in the state of Yucatan. It has been 19 years and I want to acknowledge all the people who throughout the history of Inaip Yucatan have sown the seeds and fertilized the soil so that it can bear fruit and continue to be harvested,” he said.
