A tractor-trailer from the GAL company ended up hanging from the guardrail of a bridge located on the Mérida Periférico, after the driver lost control while attempting to ascend it due to drowsiness.

The incident occurred on Wednesday morning, around 9:30 am, at kilometer 10 of the mentioned route, where the vehicle passage towards the Xmatkuil community in Mérida is located.

The heavy truck was traveling in the outer lane from south to north, but as it reached the curve while ascending the bridge, the steering force overpowered the driver and the vehicle veered off the road on the right side.

According to preliminary information provided by the authorities, the GAL truck driver dozed off at the wheel, which is why he couldn’t control the vehicle when reaching the curve.

Thanks to the guardrail, the driver was saved from going over the edge, as the cabin of his truck was left hanging only from the metal curb.

The impact caused part of the bridge’s concrete to detach, resulting in a large amount of debris scattered on the outer lane of the peripheral road.

Officers from the southern sector of the State Police and paramedics from the Ministry of Public Security (SSP) arrived at the scene, where they attended to the truck driver and implemented a traffic operation that included the closure of the lane and one of the upper lanes of the bridge for private vehicles.
