19 cases of heat stroke registered in Yucatán so far this month

MÉRIDA, Yucatan, June 13, 2023. So far, 19 cases of heat stroke have been registered in Yucatan, three of which occurred in the last week, according to the latest Epidemiological Bulletin issued by the Federal Health Secretariat.

The report registers 19 cases related to high temperatures, of which 12 are men and 7 are women, in the same way it indicates that in the same period, but in 2022, 12 cases were registered.

Given this panorama and the high temperatures that have been felt in a large part of the state, especially in Merida, health institutions have not hesitated to publish some recommendations to avoid heat stroke, since in recent days, the thermometer has not dropped below 37 degrees and the wind chill has reached 47 degrees.

The IMSS called on the population not to expose themselves to the sun for prolonged periods of time, especially between 12:00 and 16:00 hours, and to keep homes and work areas well ventilated.

He stressed the importance of staying well hydrated, drinking water constantly and avoiding sodas and alcoholic beverages, and recommended wearing light-colored clothing, as well as loose-fitting, cotton and light clothing that allows perspiration.

He also recommended the use of sunscreen, caps, hats and umbrellas in case you have to go out in the sun.

Symptoms of heat stroke include headache, excessive sweating or feeling of extreme tiredness, agitation, nausea, rapid breathing and sudden exhaustion. In case of presenting these symptoms, it is important to go to the doctor for prompt attention.

It should be noted that if cases of heat stroke are not followed up by a physician, they may generate temporary or permanent complications in organs such as the heart, lungs, kidneys, liver and brain, resulting in increased pulse and heart rate, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, fainting and even death.
