Canada initiated an investigation on Saturday, June 24th into the implosion of the submersible Titan, whose disappearance near the remains of the Titanic with five men on board had triggered a multinational search and rescue operation.
Investigators from the TSB boarded the Canadian-flagged cargo ship Polar Price on Saturday, which had departed from St. John’s last weekend to transport the Titan to its launching point in the North Atlantic.
The Transportation Safety Board routinely investigates aviation, railway, maritime, and pipeline accidents to improve transportation safety. It does not determine guilt or civil or criminal responsibilities.
The U.S. Coast Guard stated on Thursday that the five people on board the submersible died after the vessel suffered a “catastrophic implosion.”
Remains were found on the seabed about 500 meters from the bow of the Titanic.
Meanwhile, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is investigating whether any criminal laws were violated in the chain of events that led to the adventurers’ deaths.
Investigators have to determine “whether a full RCMP investigation is justified or not,” stated Superintendent of Newfoundland and Labrador province, Kent Osmond.
“That investigation will only proceed if our examination indicates that federal or provincial criminal laws may have been violated,” he said.
