Espita, the so-called “Athens of Yucatán” that belonged to the province of Los Cupules, received the distinction of Magical Town of Mexico for its great historical, cultural and architectural wealth, for its traditions and customs with which it captivates its visitors from the year of 1852 in which it reached the category of Villa.
This title was granted by the Ministry of Tourism of Mexico (along with Motul and Tekax), and after a long process, Espita was finally recognized for its unique cultural legacy.
This news spread on social networks after Michelle Fridman, State Secretary of Tourism of the State Government, declared that the state of Yucatán has now reached 7 appointments, 5 of which have been approved under the management of Governor Mauricio Vila and with the support of Miguel Torruco, Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico.
Expressing that it joins the magical towns of Izamal, Valladolid, Maní, Sisal, Espita, Motul, and Tekax and that without a doubt this will open the door to new tourism development opportunities for Yucatan through promotion, investment attraction, training of the industry and product development.
How to get there
This municipality is located 165 kilometers from Mérida, 49 kilometers from Valladolid, 27 kilometers from Tizimín, and 152 kilometers from the Cancún International Airport. Its geographical position connects it with other Yucatecan national and international interesting locations featuring archaeological zones, beaches, and natural parks.
It is considered an almost obligatory stop for tourism that enjoys well-preserved colonial architecture. Espita’s gastronomy is rich in a variety of Panuchos, Empanadas and the typical dish that identifies this city, which is the Kots’ob.
The Kots’ob is a tamale made of dough, wrapped with Xmakulan leaves, better known around Mexico as “Hoja Santa” (holy leaf), stuffed with ground nuggets, ibes, and other ingredients.
Espita is also famous for the warmth of its people, the natural beauty that surrounds the town, and other attractions such as the Kancabá Hacienda, more than 20 cenotes, in addition to a magnificent archaeological zone.
For this and more, it becomes an invaluable jewel of the entity and with this appointment it is expected that it will achieve greater tourism growth, in addition to great generation of jobs that strengthen the economy of its inhabitants.
