Pilgrim’s Pride, a multinational poultry food processing company, has formally expressed its intentions to establish plants in eight municipalities in Yucatán.

This company, which is 17 times larger than other food producers in Yucatán such as Bachoco, Crío, and Kekén, presented the “Yucatán Project” to Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal and the Secretary of Sustainable Development (SDS), Sayda Rodríguez Gómez.

This business development plan includes the installation of different plants in the municipalities of Umán (where they currently have one), Seyé, Kanasín, Yaxcabá, Peto, Kantunil, Tunkás, and Espita, covering practically the entire central and southern part of the state.

To obtain raw materials, the food processing plants will promote the construction of new poultry farms and increase the capacity of those currently installed in the region, with the aim of having locally grown chickens and reducing production costs.

The announcement between the representatives of the multinational company and the government of Yucatán was made by Governor Vila Dosal himself, who assured that this type of investment will generate employment and economic development for the state.

“We discussed the projects that will be carried out in Yucatán, creating more job opportunities in the interior of the state. We will continue working as a team to bring jobs to every corner of our state and boost the economy of Yucatecan families,” wrote the governor.

However, the announcement was not well received by internet users, who criticized the governor for allowing the arrival of companies that establish mega-farms, deplete the region’s water, and contaminate the cenotes and soil.
