Through the “One child, one tree” strategy, the State Government has distributed 75,211 native plants, which is equivalent to planting 225.86 hectares, in basic level schools in municipalities in the center and east of the state, adding more 800,000 trees planted through the Arborizando Yucatán program, exceeding the goal of 600,000 established at the beginning of the administration of Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal.
It should be remembered that this strategy is implemented in coordination by the Secretariats of Sustainable Development (SDS) and Education (Segey), and consists of planting more than 300,000 units in the 106 demarcations, during the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 academic years, for the benefit of 352,423 girls and boys.
By adding the aforementioned 75,211, an accumulated number of 800,000 specimens granted and planted through the Arborizando scheme was reached, thus exceeding the goal established at the beginning of the present administration, of 600,000.
“One child, one tree” seeks to increase forest cover in the communities of the territory, through Basic Education schools and Educational Development Centers (CEDE), in order to promote sustainability and strengthen environmental culture among children, with educational activities.
“We reinforce our Governor’s commitment to carry a culture for the tree, through which each one of us Yucatecans values the environmental services of trees, and we commit to making the change to an increasingly green Yucatan,” he said. Sayda Rodríguez Gómez, head of the SDS.
This joint work will contribute to the objectives of the state strategy Arborizando Yucatán: mitigate climate change, through the reforestation of native specimens; contribute to food security, by planting fruit trees and the development of school gardens, and promote the recovery of traditions, by planting medicinal and aromatic species in schools.
In this way, in collaboration with all the educational actors, mothers and fathers, as well as inhabitants of the communities, ornamental plants will be added to the landscaping of the schools of the 106 municipalities of Yucatán.
