For many years in Mérida, the Ciudad Maya restaurant had a boom among the Yucatecans, as it was a space with scale constructions of the most important pre-Hispanic buildings such as the Chichén Itzá Pyramid, the Observatory, the Sacred Cenote and other architectural motifs of the Mayan culture.
It was during the 1970s when this place in the heart of the city, just a few meters from the Centennial Zoo, had its heyday and today it is completely abandoned and there are no plans to rescue this place full of Myths and legends.
For those who do not know the history of Ciudad Maya, the mere fact of its existence is already a mystery, since there are people who believe that it is an authentic forgotten archaeological zone, but in reality, they are the vestiges of what was once a restaurant and center night.
The space that was once the stage for singers, comedians, stars, and ballets, is now found among weeds, garbage, and graffiti; occupied by tenants like Toloks and other animals.
Pablo, the lonely inhabitant
In 2020, the story of Pablo was revealed, a man who, after being released from prison in 2017 and not having the support of his family, finding himself helpless, adopted Ciudad Maya as his home.
Little by little the neighbors of the course adapted to his presence in the place to the degree of giving him food, assuring that he is not a person who represents any danger. Pablo assures that even people who enter clandestinely to take a tour of the place, leave him a ‘tip’.
Ciudad Maya: a restaurant with an architecture
This restaurant inspired by Mayan architecture was built by Mr. Rubén González Aguilar, better known as ‘Bono’, which during the 70s and 80s was one of the most popular places in the city, until its debacle in the 1970s. the 90s.
Located on Calle 82 between 61 and 65, the Ciudad Maya restaurant went from being an obligatory destination for tourists who came to Yucatan to a place in ruins, only a memory of a time of greatness that little by little goes into oblivion.
