In Progreso, there has been a notable increase in turtle nestings on various beaches in the area at the official start of the summer vacation season. The Ecological Police of Progreso urges vacationers to exercise extreme care and avoid damaging the nests.

For several days now, beachgoers have been reporting the discovery of nests on the international and traditional boardwalks, as well as on the coasts of Chelem, Chuburná, and Chicxulub Puerto.

Due to the increase in the number of eggs and hatchlings, Cetmar 17 in Progreso has expanded the Turtle Corral to care for them until the season when they will be released into the sea.

As per the count, more than 300 turtle eggs have been rescued until the past weekend. The Ecological Police of Progreso attended to two turtle hatchings, releasing 79 hatchlings on the first occasion and rescuing 98 eggs that had been accidentally unearthed by children playing in the sand on the traditional boardwalk.

Carlos León Alemán, in charge of the Cetmar Turtle Camp, explained that they extended the metal mesh perimeter towards the beach to ensure suitable conditions.

He further detailed that this measure aims to preserve and protect sea turtles in the region during the nesting season, promoting the conservation of this endangered species.
