Yucatecan rapper wins a Mayan Language music contest

The song “Wayano’one” (Here we are), from the rap genre, allowed Ángel Antonio Cocom Pech, from San Francisco Tinum, obtain first place in the 4th State Contest for Composition and Singing in the Mayan Language, promoted by governor Mauricio Villa Dosal.

During the celebration of the International Day of Indigenous People, the head of the Ministry of Culture and the Arts (Sedeculta), Loreto Villanueva Trujillo, hosted the awards ceremony to the three winners of the call entitled “U k´aayil in k” (My people’s song), from the Institute for the Development of Mayan Culture (Indemaya).

The second place went to Roy Elisur Góngora Magaña who composed the ballad “Yaan in yabiltikech” (I’m going to love you) and third place went to Damián Medina Van Berkum with the acoustic “Júunkúul taj” (sunflower goldeleye), both from the municipality of Akil.

“I greatly congratulate these young people because they are doing this important task of making our music heard and heard in our language,” said Loreto Villanueva, stressing that actions like this leave a mark on their lives.

“All the participants will have the certainty that they are winners from the moment they approached the composition, they approached the music and they probably put all their hearts and efforts so that each of the lyrics also expresses their feelings,” he said.

She stressed that, as part of the culture decentralization strategy, the governor promotes houses and spaces in the area, part of this work will be reflected in the concert “Trova for all”, with more than 130 girls, boys and young people from 29 municipalities. The appointment will be on August 13 at noon, in the “Armando Manzanero” theater.

Also, the general director of the Institute for the Development of Mayan Culture of the State of Yucatan (Indemaya), Eric Villanueva Mukul, said that “this day is to recognize and preserve the contributions that our ancestors” we chose music because it is one of the strongest cultural expressions that humanity has and also that we have the Yucatecan Mayans and also Yucatan is a land of great composers, of great musicians”.

The goal of this contest is to promote cultural expressions, creativity, composition and music in the ancestral language, as well as the strengthening and dissemination of this, while making the young talents of Yucatan known. The theme of the melodies was free and the genre as well.

The juries were Luis Pérez Sabido and José María Poot Cajún, who qualified the interpretation, lyrics and music. There were 14 contestants in the event.

During the ceremony, held at the Palacio de la Música, the winners presented their respective compositions; Pérez Sabido participated with his poems “La noche del baktún” and “Retoma tus raíces”, while rapper Pat Boy performed a repertoire with the best of his hits.

Recognitions and honorable mentions were also given to the participants, Víctor Manuel Aarón Sánchez and his song U lu’umil maaya t’aan (The land of the Mayan speaker) and Didier Argelio Chan Quijano, with Min tuskech (I don’t lie to you).
