The Tren Maya Project in Mexico is a controversial railway project that aims to connect the tourist destinations and archaeological sites of the Yucatán Peninsula.
However, many environmentalists and indigenous leaders have denounced the project for destroying the ecosystems of the region. The project involves clearing large areas of jungle, which are home to diverse flora and fauna, and damaging the underground water systems, which are sacred to the Mayans and form unique cenotes. The project also threatens the cultural heritage of the Mayans, as many archaeological ruins have been discovered during the construction and could be lost or damaged. The project has been criticized for violating various environmental laws and regulations, and for ignoring the voices of the local communities who will be affected by this railway project.
But, according to Joaquin Diaz Mena, the man closest to AMLO in Yucatán, this project has no negative impact on the environment.
MÉRIDA, Yucatan, September 4, 2023 – “In the five years of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s administration, the Tren Maya project has taken on a leading role as one of the major engines of development and transformation in Yucatán and throughout Mexico. One of the most tangible impacts of the Tren Maya has been the creation of jobs and the economic boost to the region,” highlighted Joaquin “Huacho” Diaz Mena, the Federal Government Delegate in Yucatan.
The ambitious Tren Maya project, an icon of integral development in the region, has advanced significantly in the last five years. This emblematic rail project, which spans more than 1,500 kilometers of railroad tracks, is already bringing a number of significant benefits to the Yucatan, from job creation to revitalizing local communities and boosting tourism.
As part of the benefits of the Tren Maya, 1.3 billion pesos will be allocated for the construction of the Gran Parque La Plancha, which will become the largest recreational space in the state, destined for the enjoyment of its inhabitants.
The Mayan Train has left a cultural legacy along its route, with projects such as the Pisté Handicrafts Market, the rescue of the Santo Domingo Church in Uayma, the construction of the Meteorite Museum in Progreso and the remodeling of the main parks of Chemax and the Magical Town of Izamal. In addition, the rebuilding of the markets of Chelem, Chuburna and Chicxulub, in the commissaries of Progreso, has transformed the appearance of the municipalities, preparing them to receive the millions of tourists that will arrive when the Mayan Train enters into operation.
In recognition of the support provided to Yucatan and all of Mexico, Joaquin “Huacho” Diaz Mena expressed his sincere congratulations to President Lopez Obrador for these significant achievements in five years of government. He also reiterated his commitment as Delegate to continue supporting the President and contribute with his work and results to continue transforming Yucatan and the country as a whole.
