Mexico City – With the objective of collaborating on environmental issues, the government headed by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, through the Secretary of Ecology and Environment, Huguette Hernández Gómez, signed a Letter of Intent with Wilfred Mohr, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Mexico.
To follow up on the New Agreement for the Welfare and Development of Quintana Roo, which promotes environmental care and the conservation of natural resources that favor sustainable, sustainable and integral development and improve the living conditions of the population, this Letter of Intent was signed, which focuses on the management and conservation of water and the environment.
The signing of this Letter responds to the concern for climate change and its impacts, as well as the increase in sea level and coastal flooding, drought and extreme heat, the increase in the frequency and intensity of severe weather events and environmental phenomena such as the massive arrival of sargassum to the Mexican coasts.
This agreement between Quintana Roo and the Netherlands, will identify possibilities for collaboration on issues such as: environmental governance including public policies and legislation; coastal management, including restoration and conservation; sustainable management of sargassum; nature-based solutions; water and environmental technologies; wastewater treatment and sanitation; circular economy, among others.
The Letter also proposes to explore possible sources of funding for public or private sector and even international investments, supporting both parties, to obtain resources that contribute to foster biodiversity and support the well-being of societies and future generations, for prosperous and sustainable livelihoods, based on social inclusion and environmental conservation.
It should be noted that Mexico is a priority country under the Dutch International Water Ambition (NIWA), and under the Partners for Water Program, the Netherlands and Mexico have worked together towards coastal resilience and the integration of urban and tourism development in Quintana Roo.
