A tragic incident occurred on the morning of Saturday September 16 in Playa del Carmen, when a foreign tourist died after making a poorly calculated dive into the famous Cenote Azul. The accident was reported through the emergency number 911.
The staff of the cenote, located near the Barceló hotel, requested immediate help for the injured tourist.
The Solidaridad Municipality Police were the first to respond to the call, securing the area and providing support.
Although an official report on the incident has not been issued, initial investigations suggest that the foreign man suffered a serious head injury after jumping into the cenote.
The tourist’s body was preserved by agents from the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo), who will perform an autopsy to determine the exact causes of his death.
After completing the necessary legal procedures, the embassy corresponding to the nationality of the deceased will be notified, and the process of repatriating his body will begin.
Authorities continue to investigate this unfortunate event, and more details are expected to be provided in the coming days.
