The Mayor of Merida, Renan Barrera Concha, held a meeting with the Director General of the World Wildlife Fund Mexico (WWF Mexico) Jorge Rickards Guevara and the Coordinator of Markets and Financial Mechanisms, Noemi Hernandez Rodriguez, to promote a joint preservation project that will be applied to the Cuxtal Reserve.
In the meeting they held at the Municipal Palace, the Municipal President informed that the Merida City Hall has several initiatives for the preservation of the environment such as the actions enrolled in “Zero Net Zero Challenges COP26” in Latin America, its participation in Cities4Forest, the promotion of energy efficiency in conjunction with the German Cooperation for Sustainable Development (GIZ), Fab City Yucatan A.C. and the State Government, among others.
“In the Municipality we work to develop projects and initiatives that allow us to conserve the environment through citizen participation, as is the case of the Cuxtal Reserve, where the community and municipal authorities promote actions to protect this space and create awareness about the importance of the environmental services it provides for the benefit of all the inhabitants,” he said.
Jorge Rickards emphasized that the organization is interested in developing a project that includes the municipality of Mérida, specifically for the financial strengthening of the Cuxtal Reserve, after analyzing the results of the feasibility analysis, pointing out that in Mérida there are favorable political conditions that build bridges and strategic alliances, as well as public policies and programs aimed at the conservation of natural resources.
WWF’s partners include The Nature Conservancy, The Pew Charitable Trusts, Zomalab, among others, with which WWF has formed an alliance to promote the conservation of ecosystems.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the Mayor reaffirmed the commitment of the sustainability policy of his government, and the push for this alliance to consolidate with other strategic partners to invest in the conservation of natural areas that exist in Yucatan.
