The new space is a commitment fulfilled by Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal to offer attention and advice to Yucatecans with governmental procedures and services for those living in the United States.
In response to one of Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal’s commitments, Yucatecans living in the United States now have a space to carry out a series of procedures and maintain communication and cooperation links with state authorities and agencies, after the opening of the Casa del Yucateco in San Francisco, California, making Yucatan the first entity to establish an office to represent and serve its citizens in that area of the neighboring country to the north, which has the highest concentration of Yucatecans.
Located in San Mateo County, this new attention center, set up by Vila Dosal, opened its doors to offer support in health and educational procedures, receive assistance and support, and also seeks to strengthen the ties between the community of Yucatecans living in the United States and Yucatan.
Last May, during the delivery of documentation to men and women who are part of the “Cabecitas Blancas” program, the Governor announced that the Casa del Yucateco in San Francisco, California, would become a reality this year to support Yucatecans who live in the United States and do not want to lose the link with their families and their homeland.
The Casa del Yucateco depends on the Sub-direction of Attention to the Migrant of the Institute for the Development of the Mayan Culture and has the cooperation of the Coordinación de Asuntos Internacionales del Gobierno del Estado. The start of its operations corresponds to the fulfillment of Governor Mauricio Vila’s Commitment 118, established in the State Development Plan (PED) 2018-2024.
Following Vila Dosal’s instructions, both state agencies are working together so that this new office for Yucatecans abroad can strengthen the ties between the Yucatecan communities in the United States and in Yucatán, promoting a solid and lasting connection between the two.
The main objectives of this space are to provide assistance and support to Yucatecans residing in the United States; provide information and advice on legal, health and educational procedures; establish and maintain communication and cooperation links with local authorities and agencies in Yucatan, as well as consular representations located in the area, as well as with their families living in the state.
It also seeks to foster the integration of Yucatecans into U.S. society and culture, maintaining strong ties to their Yucatecan roots, as well as to promote and disseminate the culture, traditions, gastronomy and tourism of the state.
Some of the services provided at the Casa del Yucateco are the attention and advice to Yucatecans, attention to nationals with governmental procedures and services, the reception of documents for the “Cabecitas Blancas” program, the issuance of certified copies of identity documents, and support in extraordinary situations such as the disappearance of persons, or support and advice in the repatriation of bodies.
Likewise, activities for the dissemination of culture and traditions are carried out through workshops on Yucatecan cooking and hammock weaving, which are taught in the Casa’s facilities by volunteers from the community of Yucatecans in the San Francisco Bay area.
