Just a few days before the annular solar eclipse occurs in Campeche, Dr. Yuri Peña Ramírez highlighted the population’s interest in getting advice for better viewing and avoiding damage to eyesight. However, he urged people to buy filters to watch the sun from certified suppliers and those given by the Eclipse Mexico and Campeche Committees, after noticing the sale of lenses with fake filters.
The doctor highlighted the importance of this astronomical phenomenon which will occur next Saturday, October 14, 2023, and which can only be seen better in Campeche with 90.5% of the sun covered. Therefore, he invited people to witness it, the next one will occur in 2071; the last of this type was in 1920, while in 2017 it was partial in the southern area.
In this area, the National Eclipse Committee of Mexico was formed, which includes a Campeche Committee with the mission of promoting recommendations for safe observation, since a solar eclipse should not be seen with the naked eye or directly, otherwise. There is a risk of going blind permanently, a protector such as special filters is required.
He called to make sure that the filters for observing the sun are certified with the ISO 12312-2:2015 Standard, and to buy them from official suppliers; the committees spread a list of them through their Facebook pages.
Due to the importance of the event, the Colegio de la Frontera Sur (Ecosur), in coordination with the Campeche Eclipse Committee, provides free in-person and online advice to those and safe filters who are interested.
Unfortunately, he said, there is a sale of glasses with fake filters on social media, a cardboard that is easy to counterfeit and instead of having a special filter it has bags of chips, so he called on people not to risk their eyes, He also warned that the filters donated with logos from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and Eclipses México, are illegaly being sold at high prices, so he asked to report when are detected.
