The first arrival of cruise ships in October brought positive results for the tourism sector in Progreso, allowing it to continue earning income from the arrival of foreign tourism to the port.
On Friday, October 6, the Carnival cruise ship “Valor” returned to the port of Progreso, being the first of its two arrivals throughout October, where the arrival of 4 tourist ships to the state is expected. In this occasion, according to information from the Administration of the National Port System (Asipona) Progreso, the ship arrived with 2,303 passengers and a crew of 1,388 people, of which it is estimated that at least 20% of them would have remained in the port.
Miguel Chay, a tourist service provider on the traditional boardwalk, commented that the number of visitors is very small compared to before the pandemic.
However, he indicated that they hope that the economic reactivation can make things improve little by little, commenting that for now, local and national tourism represents the best income for the port’s businesses since its frequency, number, and consumption are greater than that of the international one (from cruise ships).
During their stay in the port, the tourists enjoyed a warm day, allowing walkers to remain in the municipality for as long as they had available.
Waiters from local restaurants, who preferred anonymity, indicated that unfortunately when the cruise ships arrive in Progreso they do so from Cozumel, so they arrive at the port with a much lower budget, so their purchases are not the same as when the Yucatecan coast is your first stop.
