Is Yucatán a land of Immigrants?
Between January and July 2023, 577 foreign immigrants have been assured in Yucatán, a figure that amounts to 82 per month, which is three per day or one every eight hours. Most of them originate from 24 countries in Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas, and they were transiting through the state illegally, according to data from the Ministry of the Interior (Segob).
Seven out of every ten of these immigrants were captured in seven different operations carried out in the capital and various highways of the state in the first months of the year. During a small surge, for the first time, people from “unprecedented” countries like India, Nigeria, Singapore, and Vietnam were detained.
During this migration “peak,” Yucatán broke several records and climbed from the 30th to the 24th position in the national ranking in March, then to the 21st position in May, where it had never been before. In June, it “stabilized” at the 22nd position, and no new migration wave has been recorded since.
Based on statistics, across the country, there were 224,268 foreigners who encountered problems with their documentation to prove their legal stay in Mexico, of which 577 were detected in Yucatán, coming from 18 American countries, four Asian countries, one European country, and one African country.
According to the Unit for Migration Policy, Registration, and Identity of People at Segob, from January to July, 165 were Indians (28.6 percent of the total), 142 were Guatemalans (24.61 percent), and 99 were Brazilians (17.16 percent). These three nationalities accounted for 70.36 percent of the total.
According to “Foreigners Presented Events by Migration Authority,” there are also 33 Colombians, 27 Cubans, 22 Hondurans, 14 Salvadorans, 11 Haitians, as well as 10 each from the Dominican Republic and the United States.
Similarly, there are seven from Venezuela, six each from Peru and China, five from Nicaragua and Vietnam, respectively, and four from Argentina. Additionally, three are from Bolivia, two from Belize, and the rest are from Chile, Ecuador, Panama, Romania, Singapore, and Nigeria.
From 2011 to the present, during these seven months, historical highs have already been recorded for Brazil, Guatemala, Haiti, India, Peru, and the Dominican Republic.
Finally, out of all the migrants assured in the country, 71,117 were in Chiapas, representing 31.9 percent, followed by Tabasco with 61,639 detained, accounting for 27.48 percent, and Veracruz with 20,590 people, making up 9.18 percent. In contrast, Colima had seven detainees, which is 0.003 percent, 26 were from Michoacán, equivalent to 0.011 percent, and 29 were from Morelos, making up 0.013 percent.”
