Following the Federal Government Finance Ministry’s estimation of lower revenue for the upcoming year, Yucatán will receive 713 million pesos less in the Federal Expenditure Budget for 2024.

The State Government announced yesterday that, once again, they will “tighten their belts” and adjust in administrative and operational areas, without reducing or impacting programs aimed at the population.

With this economic outlook, the current state administration (2018-2024), led by Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal, will conclude its term on August 31, 2024. Since the beginning of his term in 2018, the governor has implemented an austerity policy.

Roberto Suárez Coldwell, the Secretary of Administration and Finance, stated, “We have to absorb this impact (reduction of 713 million pesos) with greater austerity and control administrative and operational expenses. We have always done more with less in recent years, and in 2024, we will have to emphasize this way of working and ensure resources for programs that have the greatest impact on the population, such as those related to health, security, and education.”

Suárez Coldwell affirmed that, even with the adverse economic conditions, the state administration will not affect social programs like “Health Closely” or the equipment and renovation of 140 health centers, among others.

He added that, with all the above, Yucatán’s fiscal space is much smaller than it was in 2018 when the state received additional federal funds. Despite this, the programs implemented over the past five years demonstrate sound finances and efficient resources, managed with discipline and transparency.

In the second week of November, the State Government will present the 2024 Budget Project to the Citizen Council for Budget Preparation and Monitoring, which will then be submitted to the State Congress on November 25.

On October 8, the State Government revealed that the Federal Expenditure Budget (PPEF) for the coming year includes cuts for Yucatán. In 2024, State Participation and Contributions will be reduced by 713 million pesos (1.7%) in real terms compared to 2023. This marks the fourth time a reduction in the economic package has been projected.

The main reason for this reduction, according to the document from the Federal Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP), is the expectation of lower revenue for the upcoming year.
