Explosion in a fireworks warehouse on the Merida-Motul

A warehouse full of fireworks exploded on the Mérida-Motul highway in the Mocochá – Conkal section.

The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 26th, when one of the warehouses began to catch fire, causing the accumulated gunpowder to explode.

Firefighters’ water tankers and staff from the Ministry of Public Security (SSP). Police officers from the same corporation and the State Investigation Police (PEI) arrived at the scene.

So far, it is unknown what caused the explosion, but it is believed that it could have occurred due to a short circuit or the accumulation of heat inside the warehouse. There is an unofficial report of one person injured.

The explosions, which lasted several minutes, could be heard as far as Xcuyún and Conkal. In addition, the smoke could be seen as far as Baca, according to gas station employees. Resients of Xcuyún went out into the street when they heard the explosions.

Thousands of fireworks were stored in that warehouse.
