René Flores Ayora, road auditor, reports that in 2023 Yucatán registered more than 200 deaths in road accidents.

“261 accidents have been confirmed from January to December, with at least 141 motorcyclists among the main victims,” explained the specialist. Pedestrians are also at risk, with 41 deaths.

“In addition, 35 drivers, 30 vehicle passengers, and 14 cyclists lost their lives”, he added.

In the current December holiday season alone, the road auditor indicates that 16 people have lost their lives, most of them motorcyclists.

“We insist on the importance of respecting speed limits and avoiding distractions,” he says.

Road accidents in Mérida: Who are the victims?

In Mérida, road accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists have experienced a notable increase in recent years, as revealed by the city’s Mobility Plan.

The Municipal Planning Institute (Implan) highlights an 8 percent increase in cyclist and pedestrian accidents from the end of 2019 to 2022.

“It is vital to continue making bike lanes, wide sidewalks and applying speed controls to improve safety.”

Critical areas have also been identified such as certain intersections and the peripheral circuit, where 66 percent of pedestrian accidents occur.
