The emblematic work of the government headed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, still unfinished, the Mayan Train, begins the year 2024 with failures and passengers who were stranded in Palenque, Chiapas when they were heading to Cancún, Quintana Roo, this Wednesday, the 3rd of January.
Since its partial inauguration, the railway has had a chaotic start, even though it is built and operated by the military, since the first users have reported slow routes since December, with delays and poor dining service on board.
Although they supposedly suspended the Mayan Train service on December 28 to start 2024 better, they finally started the year with more failures, as users reported schedule changes and cancellations that left dozens of travelers and tourists stranded also in Cancun, in addition to ticket sales, have not yet been regularized.
When they canceled several train trips at the end of 2023, they said it was due to alleged adjustments in their logistics before the inauguration of the Cancún-Palenque route, however, it was not fully regularized either.
The failures of the Mayan Train are accumulating, since during the morning of this Wednesday, January 3, several passengers were stranded in Palenque, who were heading to Cancun, so the military company that operates the Mayan Train immediately sent the affected passengers on the next message:
“We regret to inform you that the 7 am train on the Palenque-Cancun route has been canceled. For this reason, a single departure will be made at 9:00 am, reassigning your seat to the available places on the next train.
“If your station of origin is different from Palenque, consider a delay time of approximately two hours compared to the acquired time. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”
The poor organization of those who operate the Mayan Train affected all the passengers who had planned to leave Palenque bound for Cancun since they would depart at 7:00 in the morning. Travelers had to look for other alternatives to be able to travel to their destination. Local media in Chiapas indicate that the engine of a train failed and stayed in Campeche. This information was reported at the station in Palenque by a person who identified himself as Major Navarro.
