A huge fire that started in the early hours on Saturday, February 3 ended up consuming “Barn 6” of the Kekén pig farm located on kilometer 63+500 of the road to Celestún, killing and injuring hundreds of pigs.
Although those in charge of that mega farm did not notify the authorities to combat the disaster, it is presumed that it could have been due to a short circuit that began at around 3 in the morning.
The latter is due to the distance from the main entrance to the farm, which is some 8 kilometers (5 miles) from the barns.
“A crew of employees used hoses and a high-pressure Karcher to combat the fire. The smoke was suffocating, but they didn’t call the Firefighters”, said one of the workers.
Likewise, the fire was put out at dawn and the number of dead pigs is unknown; One of the several witnesses indicates that he was able to count at least 500 animals that died in the incident.
Hours later, dump trucks entered the premises and left with hundreds of incinerated animals.
Finally, there are no reports of injured employees.
