The archaeological zone of Dzibilchaltún will remain closed for work on the construction of the site museum and modifications to the tourist service center being built by the INAH, for which the head of the Cultur Board , Mauricio Díaz Montalvo, indicated that it is expected to be three weeks closure and that the work will be completed before the spring equinox.
He explained that the construction of the site museum in the archaeological zone must use heavy machinery, transport, and workers who will be carrying out tasks, which would cause damage and inconvenience to tourists, so the INAH determined to close the archaeological zone to complete the work in three weeks.
Diaz Montalvo stated that, although the INAH notification was hasty, it is understood that the company assigned to carry out the work traveled to this city and there was no time to anticipate the site conditions, so the attraction was closed for the construction of the museum and the tourist inn and it should open in the next few weeks.
The head of CULTUR stated that INAH is determined to build a new museum, because the previous building was no longer adequate and the facilities had not been maintained for a long time, which damaged exhibition areas, lighting, and other important features, which is why it was It will build a new venue, with new museography and services.
In the same way, aspects of the visitor service center are detailed, which will be largely renovated with adaptations to the spaces and the capacity of the number of visitors that the archaeological site receives, so that, in the following days, an important group of workers will be carrying out these jobs, which forced the facilities and visits to be kept closed.
Díaz Montalvo stressed that the work is expected to be completed in the short term since the cruise season begins again next month and many visitors who come to Progreso look for the archaeological site of Dzibilchaltún on their tours, so it will be important that the works are completed.
He added that INAH’s commitment is for the tourist site to be open before the spring equinox -March 21- since last year it was not open due to the situation of conflict between Ejidatarios that caused the closure of Dzibilchaltún for several weeks until The legal process demanded by the affected parties was completed.
He stressed that at this time there is no conflict between the groups of community members and only construction and intervention work is being carried out at the inn for the adaptations and changes that are being made to improve the experience, conditions, security presence, and image of the archaeological site, he concluded.
