Mexico’s Naval Command stationed in Yucatán responded to the call from the inhabitants of the coastal community of “La Herradura”, who reported the presence of 21 species of pilot whale on the beach.
As previously posted on The Yucatan Times, on February 20 residents of Celestún were surprised when they saw more than 20 pilot whales stranded near the shore of the beach known as “La Herradura”.
Therefore, personnel from the Yucalpetén Oceanographic Research Station, belonging to the Thirteenth Naval Zone of the Secretariat of the Navy of Mexico (Semar), provided support to species of pilot whale (Globicephala), stranded in the vicinity of Celestún beach, Yucatan.
After receiving an emergency call to this Naval Command, from the inhabitants of the town of “La Herradura”, in Celestún, who reported the presence of 21 species of pilot whale on the beach.
Due to the above and to protect marine fauna, the immediate deployment of naval personnel was ordered to begin rescue work, so that the aforementioned mammals would return safely to the sea.
The stranding of the whales could have been due to the intense weather events that occurred in the Yucatan Peninsula, which generated high winds and waves, causing this event. Likewise, it is worth highlighting that the timely reaction of the naval personnel in collaboration with the residents, allowed all the specimens to be rescued.
