As part of the constant actions and improvements in the different municipal supply centers, Mayor Alejandro Ruz Castro supervised the work carried out on the new connecting bridge between the Lucas de Gálvez and San Benito markets.

“Markets are important centers of coexistence and commerce, so they should not only be public spaces that offer a better service to the people of Merida, but also be an attraction that boosts tourism and the economy,” the Mayor stated.

Likewise, the Municipal President confirmed the preparations for the start of the construction of the new electric ramp in Lucas de Gálvez that will facilitate the access and mobility of people with some motor disabilities in this supply center.

“These works that we supervise today are complementary to those delivered last November, which corresponded to a space for outdoor artistic events, 10 exhibition spaces, 21 food vending businesses with an area for more than 300 diners, a new viewing terrace and new toilets for people. with disabilities, carried out with an investment of more than 19 million pesos,” he highlighted.

He explained that both the pedestrian bridge that will connect the San Benito market and former meat area and the inclusive electric ramp with access from the public road to the market, represent an investment of almost three million pesos.

But the most important thing, he added, is that these works will give greater functionality and mobility to the entire area for bidders and clients.

He recalled that the investment made in these works corresponds to the 350 million pesos that the State Congress approved for the Mérida City Council to apply them one hundred percent in tenders for works for Yucatecan companies and improve the city’s infrastructure.

Likewise, he thanked the commitment, dialogue and willingness of the tenants, as well as the unions to which they belong, for joining these works that translate into a modern and functional market, which can help them increase their sales with the visit of national and foreign tourists.

In this regard, the director of Public Works David Loría Madgub explained that the new electric ramp, using Japanese technology, is in the process of traveling, so its arrival is expected by the end of March. It would start operating at the end of April.

Loría Madgub indicated that for the completion of this work that will modernize the Lucas de Gálvez, talks were held with the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), since the installation of the ramp will be carried out near the access area to fish and jewelry stores, on 56 A Street, which will require the expansion of the sidewalk.

He added that the new electric ramp will allow users to enter through the gallery, located at the top of the market, which leads to the food area, which will facilitate access to Lucas de Gálvez.

Accompanied by the Municipal Secretary, Julio Sauma Castillo and Roberto Castillo González, deputy director of Markets, as well as market tenant leaders, the Mayor also handed over the keys to a vehicle specialized in collecting solid waste, which will provide service to the market.

Also present at the supervision were the director of Municipal Public Services, José Collado Soberanis, and the leader of the Union of Baratilleros of Yucatán “Andrés Ortega”, Ángel Enrique Sánchez.
