The student community of the Autonomous University of Yucatán (UADY) donated the amount of 17,050.20 pesos to the  Mexican Association to Help Children with Cancer (AMANC)  in the state, which will be used to assist patients and their families, as well as lodging, food, transportation, and medicines.

During the event at the AMANC Center, the person in charge of the UADY Institutional Volunteer Program, Javier Cen Puerto, explained that these resources arose thanks to a fundraiser, for which different associations such as UADYMUN, Student Energy joined together at UADY, Perritos CCBA and Hoy en tu Comunidad.

“The ballot was carried out in the 15 faculties that make up the UADY, the two high schools, the Baccalaureate Academic Unit with Community Interaction, the Tizimín Multidisciplinary Unit and the Medical Service,” Cen Puerto added.

Cen Puerto indicated that this is part of the activities on International Childhood Cancer Day, which is commemorated every February 15.

The intention is to help people in vulnerable conditions

In her turn, the general director of Academic Development of the UADY, Marcela Zamudio Maya, highlighted the importance of supporting people in vulnerable conditions and that the University has that presence in society, “which turns this activity into social and economic help for people in vulnerable conditions.”

She highlighted that these actions illustrate the concerns of young people today, which are focused on contributing to a better society and ensuring that girls and boys have equal opportunities, in addition to helping those who need it most.

“I congratulate everyone for this work they do through their organizations, particularly the UADY Volunteers, for bringing this message to the entire community and the general public to help those who need it most, even if it is with a small donation,” Zamudio Maya said.

The president of AMANC Yucatán, Marissa Goff Rodríguez, explained that this institution provides comprehensive support to girls and boys who face the difficult battle against cancer.

“This institution, the only one of its kind at the national level, has become a beacon of hope for affected families playing a crucial role in the support and treatment of the little warriors who fight against this disease,” Goff Rodríguez stressed.

Likewise, he pointed out that childhood cancer is an alarming reality in Mexico, with a constant growth in the number of cases.

«A fight that involves the entire society»

“It is not just a disease, but a fight that involves the entire society,” she emphasized.

In addition, Goff Rodríguez announced that between one and two cases are detected each week, and currently childhood cancer is very common, but it can be diagnosed in time, which makes a big difference for each and every patient.

“Today AMANC benefits more than 400 children with their families and not only from Yucatán but also from neighboring states such as Quintana Roo, Campeche, Chiapas, Veracruz, and Tabasco,” she revealed.

Goff Rodríguez thanked the UADY for supporting the initiative, so that more girls and boys can continue with their treatment.

Before the delivery of the donation, the UADY Volunteers along with directors and staff of AMANC took a tour of the facilities of this Center where they facilitate laboratory studies, medical supplies and other items and services to guarantee that medical treatments are carried out in a timely manner.

They also provide oncologic and non-oncologic medications to complete healthcare protocols.
