Fishermen dismantle clandestine poaching camps in Yucatán

Just 4 days after a new Fisheries Management and Coastal Surveillance committee started working, they carried out a surprise operation and dismantled five clandestine poaching camps.

On Saturday, a new group was formed with members of Dzilam de Bravo in the fight against poaching after they recently searched warehouses in Dzilam and found species banned by federal agents.

Tired of the looting, the fishermen worked together and formed this new committee that began activities this Wednesday on the Yucatecan coast.

It was in the area known as “Las Bocas” and “Punta Nichili” where they discovered clandestine camps.

Agents from the Secretary of the Navy (Semar), inspectors from the National Aquaculture and Fisheries Commission, as well as members of the fisheries surveillance committee from the different eastern ports, participated in this operation.

Several boats left around 10 in the morning to take a tour of the high seas and look for signs of a camp since it had been reported to exist.

In the middle of the operation, they found the camps that, according to indications, had been used for a day.

At the site, they found three harpoon guns, two Hawaiian types, four hooks, three pots, and stoves. There were also two scopes, three pairs of fins, two hoses, and a three-lung compressor with a stainless steel tank. The operation lasted until around 6:30 in the afternoon and it is presumed that the marine inspection tours will continue in the coming days.
