Several buildings in Progreso are at risk of collapse

After the events recorded on Monday, March 11, in which a bricklayer suffered serious injuries after a wall fell on him during a demolition at the former Lions club, the head of Civil Protection of Progreso, Aurelio Medina Pérez, indicated that the work remains closed and waiting for the corresponding authorities to rule on responsibilities.

In an interview, he said that two similar events occurred before in Progreso that had a common denominator: injured workers who were not from the port.

Not knowing the type of soil on the coast, they have been injured after digging into more structures by removing the sand that supports the foundations, which causes the structures to give way and injure them.

According to what emerged in the recent accident, the three workers are originally from Motul. Two of them managed to escape when they saw that the wall collapsed, but the older adult could not and was trapped under the rubble.

He assured that what fell on the injured person was a 3-meter-high fence made of masonry, which functioned as a perimeter fence that he shared with another property.

“Near there, where the accident occurred, there is another construction, but the workers are from here and know how to work with sand. When they remove the soil and if there is an adjacent structure (as was the case on Monday), they must take the necessary measures to avoid leaving the foundations unprotected and prevent falls,” said the director.

Regarding the age of the buildings surrounding the former Lions Club, he pointed out that they are more than 50 years old, so their structures, mainly the perimeter walls, represent a danger.

He stressed that the agency’s staff learned last year that the property would be demolished since it had the permits. The work was constantly monitored to ensure that it complied with all protective measures. About the properties that could represent a risk to society, he emphasized that a review and analysis was carried out. The results were delivered to the federal zone, which extends along the coast from Chuburná Puerto to Uaymitún, where many properties in risk conditions were detected.
