A negative outlook is hanging over the sea turtle nesting season in Ciudad del Carmen, due to several factors including the upcoming Easter holidays, which puts the survival of these species at risk.
During “Semana Santa”, a wave of visitors is expected in the Punta San Julián area, which will allow the massive influx to compact the sand, making it shifting and unsuitable for turtle nesting.
For this reason, the president of the Tortuguero Isla Matamoros camp, Rosario Velueta Benítez, launched a call for attention to coastal erosion.
It is expected that authorities on the island will implement a control and surveillance plan on the coasts, to avoid excessive compaction of the sand, as well as delimit specific areas for access by bathers, prioritizing the protection of nesting areas.
