The monarchs of Sweden Carlos XVI Gustaf and Sofia arrived on Thursday, March 14th, at the Mérida International Airport where Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal and representatives of the three powers of the State welcomed them.
Contrary to the announcement made in his morning conference by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador that the King and Queen would travel on the Maya Train, the diplomatic and military security personnel who are in charge of the King’s safety decided to cancel this travel by rail, because it does not have a schedule in line with the real agenda, because it is a means that is slower than vans and because the safety of the route and the machines has not been proven.
The king and queen visited Yucatán with a small entourage, among which they included two of their children.
The monarchs visited the Temozón Sur hacienda, which is a private property, and enjoyed Yucatecan cuisine. Then, they traveled by road to the archaeological zone of Uxmal where the kings had an encounter with the Mayan and Yaqui culture through boys and girls who danced Yucatecan Jarana, listened to a poem in Mayan that was translated into their language, and received thanks of Yaqui children for returning a collection of sacred pieces from that ancestral culture.
In the evening, the king and queen had a gala dinner with guests from the business, social, and government sectors at the San Antonio Ool hacienda, located in the north of Mérida.
The kings spent the night at the Camino Real hotel, property of the Yucatecan tourism businessman José Chapur Zahoul, and will leave for the Mérida airport, where at 11 in the morning they will board the plane that will return them to Mexico City to finish the state visit of three days.
According to the Latinus web portal, the kings of Sweden decided at the last minute not to travel on the Mayan Train.
