The election of the next municipal authorities in the Solidaridad City Council (Playa del Carmen) has been described as “the mother of all battles”, as this is the only one of the eleven municipalities of Quintana Roo governed by the opposition and not by the Morena party, founded by President López Obrador.
Five candidates aspire to govern this mayor’s office: the current municipal president (with license) Lili Campos, from Fuerza y Corazón for Quintana Roo; Estefanía Mercado, from Sigamos Haciendo Historia; Sixto Cuevas, from Movimiento Ciudadano (MC); Jazmín Treviño, from the PRD, and Pedro López, from Más Apoyo Social (MÁS).
According to the numbers from the last two elections, Morena has the best position in “one-on-one” duels, which would endanger the continuity of the opposition coalition headed by Lili Campos.
If the trend of previous elections continues, the difference between the two main standard-bearers could range between 3,000 and 3,500 votes, which would make it the closest race of all those that will take place in Quintana Roo.
Lili Campos spoke about the successful results obtained at the International Tourism Fair (Fitur) 2024 in Madrid, Spain, where the “Somos Playa del Carmen” marketing strategy was promoted.
“We returned with excellent prospects, supported by the continued confidence of hotel chain investors, we carried out intense working sessions that resulted in 75 business appointments and the attention of more than 900 potential investors that visited our stand,” Campos stressed.
The Solidaridad Municipal President highlighted the culmination of the twinning project with Algeciras, the hometown of the late musician Paco de Lucía, who had his residence in Playa del Carmen. “We will soon unveil his bust as a tribute, symbolizing the connection of those who choose our municipality as their home,” concluded Lili Campos, who hopes to be re-elected as mayor.
