Quintana Roo largely boosted national industrial growth last year by reporting an annual rate of 120.7% and placing itself in first place among the states that contributed the most to this sector, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

In his analysis, he pointed out that of the 32 federal entities of the country, 26 showed annual increases in their industrial activity during the period January-October 2023 and Quintana Roo was the one that stood out with an annual rate of 120.7%, after three consecutive years with falls. and which represented the largest increase since 2003. By sector, he noted that the industrial growth of the southern state was derived from the annual increases of 215.7% in construction; 11.6% in electricity, water, and natural gas, and 3.2% in manufacturing, while non-oil mining contracted 97.5 percent.

To a large extent, this impulse is due to the different federal and local works that were developed in the state such as the Tren Maya, the Nichupté vehicular bridge, the Chac Mool extension, the Tulum airport, the rehabilitation of Colosio Boulevard, among others, which has detonated the construction sector.

In addition to these projects, the arrival of natural gas through the installation of gas pipelines in important cities such as Cancún and Playa del Carmen also influenced the growth of Quintana Roo.

This is because it will have a positive impact on the region since savings of up to 50% are expected compared to LP gas and since it is a more economical fuel than diesel, companies and homes could reduce their electricity costs. and gas when using it.

It will also benefit the entire region because it will increase electricity generation uninterruptedly, which will avoid blackouts due to the scarce supply of this fuel and will allow natural gas to be brought to more industries, businesses, and residences and reduce costs.

This significant advance not only promises energy efficiency and affordability but also marks a critical step toward the transition to cleaner energy sources.

This is because, although natural gas is a fossil fuel, it is cleaner than diesel or coal, so using it in companies and homes will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants. , which will help improve air quality in Playa del Carmen and improve the quality of life of the inhabitants.

The incorporation of this fuel into the infrastructure of cities is a strategic step towards more sustainable urban development, since as the region continues to grow, the choice of cleaner energy sources will contribute to the preservation of the unique natural environment that characterizes the city.

In addition, it is expected that the expansion of infrastructure to transport natural gas in the southeast of the country will generate economic opportunities by boosting competitiveness and investment in the region.

In this sense, the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO) stated that it is essential to expand access to natural gas to increase competitiveness, accelerate the energy transition, and take advantage of the opportunity of the arrival of new capital through nearshoring. On the contrary, the insufficient infrastructure to transport natural gas in the south limits the possibilities to generate, attract, and retain investments and talent in high-value-added sectors.
