The president of the Mayab Fruit Growers Union, Freddy Domínguez Aké stated that if the intense drought lasts longer in Yucatán for the next citrus harvest in the fall-winter season, there will be a sharp decrease in the fruits.
He recalled that last year, the intense drought affected the citrus harvest in Yucatán, there was a low uptake of sweet orange, grapefruit, tangerines, sour orange, and Persian lemon, and everything seems to indicate that this 2024, the drought will last longer than normal.
He pointed out that next June 1st the hurricane and tropical cyclone season begins in the Yucatan Peninsula, which can help tropical storms and tropical waves bring a lot of rain to the State, which is so badly needed in Yucatan.
He emphasized that producers continue to water crops from dawn until nightfall, regularizing the rainy season that should begin this month of May, if the lack of rainfall continues iin the state, then the problem will be bigger.
Finally, Domínguez Aké pointed out that some light rains that begin to fall in May will help to produce some Persian lemon crops, so that the citrus is not scarce; On the contrary, lower the price of the product for local consumers, but the rains and the drought are urgently needed.
