The federal government is building on the land of the “Felipe Carrillo Puerto” thermoelectric plant, which has been operating in this city for more than 30 years, as part of a comprehensive Tren Maya project.
The new plant was planned to be built in this city to provide energy for the railway operation.
The Tren Maya is already operating even without the terminal being ready, the electrical infrastructure on the edge of the rails along its route has not been completed either.
From outside the site where the work is located, you can barely see part of the structures, but outsiders are not allowed access, even at the door there are security personnel.
Some workers consulted said that, in their opinion, the project is around 60% complete, and a large part of the infrastructure of what will be the combined cycle plant has already been installed.
They also said that, according to what they are informed inside the land, the work is scheduled to be completed at the end of this year or the beginning of 2025 and will produce around 1,050 megawatts of energy, more than the two plants that are together currently operating.
Some people spend several hours in front of the work site, waiting to be called at any moment to be hired temporarily on the project. They remain there from morning until evening. The “Felipe Carrillo Puerto” thermoelectric plant produces about 300 megawatts and the Valladolid II (private) 525. Both add up to 825 MW, so the new plant under construction would generate a little more because, as is known, it will supply energy to the neighboring state of Quintana Roo just where the Tren Maya route will pass.
