The Federal Environmental Protection Agency secured a male black jaguar, whose leg had to be amputated after an injury suffered at the La Reina de Tizimín Zoo was inadequately treated.
The animal was kept under the protection of Centenario Park, in Mérida, while the corresponding investigations are carried out to determine responsibilities.
This black jaguar was not even the property of La Reina Zoo but was loaned to it by a specialized farm last April for reproductive purposes.
At dawn on May 13, the animal was located in the sleeping area along with a female specimen, in separate but adjacent cages. The male put his left paw into the female’s enclosure, and she bit him, causing serious injuries.
Two days later, La Reina staff took the black jaguar to the Centenario, notifying Profepa. Inspectors from this department attended and it was observed that the injury presented by the feline, due to inadequate care, warranted the amputation of the limb, and the surgical intervention was performed.
Now, the animal was left without a leg and the zoo is in trouble, we must remember that recently a lion lost its life in that same place, presumably due to heat stroke, but until now there has been no news. an official report.
