At two in the morning on Saturday, June 1, a large southern sector of the Center was left without electricity service. At eight in the morning, the situation was the same and there were no signs of the blackout ending.
Neighbors on 66th Street and 91st Street and this street up to 64th Street and other arteries were already expecting the absence of electricity since there have been interruptions for several days, although for a brief period.
The incident caused residents of that sector to abandon their hammocks or beds: the fans and air conditioning equipment stopped working.
The heat inside the houses made their residents go out to the patios and even to the street to “cool off” with the breeze.
In the morning, six hours after the power failure, concern increased because the food stored in refrigerators was already beginning to decompose.
Due to the heat wave and, according to experts, the lack of investment by the federal government in improving the electrical grid, blackouts have been frequent throughout the country and Yucatán has been no exception. Since last April, residents of numerous neighborhoods in Mérida and towns throughout the state have held protests and street blockades to demand an end to the blackouts.
