Severe crisis due to the drought in Izamal

A true environmental crisis is currently being experienced in Izamal since high temperatures and lack of rain affect the agricultural, beekeeping, and livestock sectors.

According to the small beekeepers, in these months of intense drought, water has to be brought to the apiaries, some with sugar, because the flowering of trees is scarcer.

“What can I tell you? Of the 15 boxes of bees that I had today, I only have half left, the losses are tremendous. I estimate that this drought will continue for another month, we do not see mornings and afternoons with clouds. The problem is serious because the bees leave or when you open the boxes they are dead,” said José Luis Yam.

“This week three cattle died, one in pregnancy. My paddocks are large, but the lack of rain and the heat dried out the pastures. I had to let two cows out and I took a bull to my house to see if it recovers. This matter is serious,” said Romualdo Chi Uc.

“The truth is we did not prepare for this drought, we were overconfident. We thought it would be a short season. It is a problem in which we must see the need to be more aware of caring for the environment,” stressed Luis Estrella.

“In six years we must see the results of the ‘Sembrando Vida’ program if it worked or to know if the supervisors overlapped the planting of trees, which was never done and through a little trick the program was overlapped,” he added.

In the region, it was also found that plum cultivation was low because the sun baked them. The situation was repeated with the banana trees that collapsed with all their bunches. For their part, fodder trees are still scarce, as is well water, which has decreased considerably.
