After the sighting of a jaguar near Arco Norte, recorded in recent months, the municipal government of Benito Juárez, through the General Directorate of Ecology, notified the authorities, in addition to working in coordination with the Federal Attorney’s Office of Environmental Protection and the National Alliance for the Conservation of the Jaguar, to protect this endangered species.
In this regard, the head of the agency, Tania Fernández, explained that several committees and associations are dedicated to the conservation of this type of species. “The most important thing is that they help us make citizens aware that these species are extremely important for our environment and we must protect them, beyond scaring them,” he said.
He added that “the Mexican jaguar is a protected species and is classified as endangered, it is found in the Mexican Official Standard (NOM) 059, it is important to know that the jaguar is not a species that attacks humans the attacks humans are extremely rare; “They are predators, and they usually hunt prey that is commonly found in their habitat.”

If they are defending their territory, protecting their young, or if they feel threatened or cornered, an attack on humans could occur; Therefore, it is important not to approach this type of species so as not to make them feel cornered and react in a different way than what they commonly do in their habitat.
Likewise, the municipal agency issued certain recommendations: all people who have dogs or cats must remember that they are household pets, and they cannot be free or on the street, because unfortunately, it can cause jaguars to approach this area, and If they do not have any prey, they – as a wild species – begin to look for these types of domestic animals for their food.
