Tropical Storm Alberto made landfall at around 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 20th, impacting the coast of Ciudad Madero, Tamaulipas, causing rain in much of the country, reported the National Water Commission (Conagua).

By 06:30 in the morning, Tropical Cyclone Alberto arrived in the north of Veracruz, moving towards the west of the country, for which Xalapa Civil Protection suspended all educational activities.

It is expected that during this day the tropical storm will advance over land and around noon it will be located 40 kilometers east-southeast of San Luis Potosí, and 285 kilometers west of Puerto Altamira, moving away from the south of Tamaulipas.

Alberto is already causing damage, such as the overflowing of the Santa Catarina River in Monterrey, which crosses the metropolitan area through six municipalities of Nuevo León, according to state Civil Protection.

The agency detailed at 06:00 AM that the level of the Santa Catarina had reached 90 percent and continued to increase.

In that same state, the Monterrey-Saltillo Highway was closed during the early morning due to runoff and landslides in some sections.

Civil Protection of Nuevo León also reported the death of three minors, one drowned and two due to electric shock resulting from the rains caused by the tropical storm.

Before its arrival, the agency predicted torrential rains also in Coahuila and San Luis Potosí, as well as intense rains in Chiapas, Durango, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, Veracruz and Zacatecas.

The authorities predict that there will be waves of two to four meters on the coasts of Tamaulipas and northern Veracruz, and one to three meters on the coasts of Campeche, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, and Yucatán.

Very heavy rains will occur in Aguascalientes, Campeche, Chihuahua, Colima, State of Mexico, Guerrero, Jalisco, Michoacán, Nayarit, Quintana Roo, Sinaloa, Tabasco, and Tlaxcala; while strong precipitation is expected in Mexico City, Morelos and Yucatán, and isolated in Sonora.

Due to the arrival of Tropical Storm Alberto, the ports of Altamira, Tampico, La Pesca, Puerto Matamoros, Falcón, and Vicente Guerrero, in Tamaulipas, were closed to major and minor navigation.
