Between January and April 2024, on average, two women a day were victims of femicide in Mexico, in this period more than 700 thousand were victims of a crime, according to the latest report from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP).
The document Criminal Incidence against Women states that between January and April, 246 femicides were perpetrated, plus the 80 cases in May, that is, a total of 326 women were victims of this crime. However, this figure only represents a little more than 0.03% of the total cases of violence against them in the country.
But women are not only victims of feminicide in Mexico, between January and April there were 842 cases of intentional homicides and 109 culpable homicides, that is, 951 more deaths for a total of 1,277.
Kidnapping, corruption and trafficking of minors, human trafficking, extortion, sexual abuse, harassment, homicide and intentional injuries, among others, are the crimes that are committed daily against women throughout the country. The report reveals that March was the most violent month, with a total of 73 femicides.
This figure is alarming, since there is no state that is free of this crime. All states have recorded at least two cases. Nuevo León holds the highest number of homicides against women for reasons of gender: 33 incidents.
The figures reveal that the states in the center of the country are those that concentrate almost 30% of the number of total femicides in the country. In CDMX, the State of Mexico, Morelos and Puebla, 95 murders of women were perpetrated for gender reasons.
Until May, the number of femicides amounts to 331,109 cases less than in 2023, which ended with 831 victims of this crime.
The National Citizen Observatory of Femicides in Yucatán has documented 83 cases from 2008 to 2022. In 2023 the Prosecutor’s Office reported 8 cases, but the Observatory believes there should be 10, and in 2024 there is no recognized femicide, but there are 4 cases that could fit into this crime, which is under investigation.
