Given the imminent arrival of Hurricane ‘Beryl’ to the coasts of Quintana Roo, the government of Cancun announced the availability of temporary shelters for citizens, tourists, and even pets.
Cancún has 87 temporary shelters to receive 23,000 people, as well as two shelters for tourists in Bonfil and Cancún; and the first “pet-friendly” shelter established since 2019 at Ek Balam Elementary in Superblock 247.
This was announced during the press conference of the Permanent Session of the Specialized Operational Committee on Hydrometeorological Phenomena Season 2024, chaired by Pablo Gutiérrez Fernández, First Councilor and in charge of the Municipal Presidency of the Benito Juárez City Council.
In the session, it was said that 96 shelters were prepared in hotels with a capacity for 33,000 people and 16 self-shelters for 6,828 people.
In total, Cancun has shelter for more than 62,900 people, given the imminent arrival of Hurricane ‘Beryl’ to the coasts of Quintana Roo.
Likewise, Gutiérrez Fernández announced that there are 2,431 personnel and 250 vehicles, including vans, trucks, pipes, cranes, and buses.
In addition, they have 768 work tools and equipment, as well as two ambulances at the Secretariat of Citizen Security.
