In Campeche, clandestine logging was reduced by up to 90 percent, stated the state coordinator, Marcelo Contreras Roldán, revealing that although the six-year goal was to benefit 20,000 planters, a registry of 21,200 was reached.
He recalled that when this Government began there was a lot of turbulence, political instability, and criticism by the media about the “Sembrando Vida” reforestation program, which was accused of felling large trees and jungle to establish the agroforestry system, but they were never able to verify it and it was only a media war of many actors and sources.
Sembrando Vida began in 2019 with 10 thousand planters from Calakmul, Escárcega, and Candelaria belonging to the South of the State.
In 2020 it was expanded to the rest of the municipalities, except in Ciudad del Carmen and Campeche until a year later (2021), when there was an extraordinary extension and it reached 21 thousand, when the estimated goal was 20 thousand.
The official highlighted that with this program, more than 55 thousand hectares have been reforested with the agroforestry system and the Milpa Intercalated Between Fruit Trees (MIAF) system, which serve to refresh the land, also to continue producing, “because that is what it is about, to stop environmental deterioration, but also to produce.”
Likewise, he reiterated that in some areas that were identified with clandestine logging, especially to make charcoal, this activity drastically decreased between 80 and 90 percent thanks to Sembrando Vida, mainly in the municipalities of Escárcega and Candelaria, and the loggers were included in the program so that they dedicate themselves to reforesting and not damaging.
“I have identified that the Mennonite culture produces charcoal, they are making charcoal, but conditions have improved substantially,” he stressed.
Finally, Contreras Roldán said that although President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announced that Sembrando Vida will continue in her Government, they are currently focused on the closing of this fiscal year to have an estimate of how much land use improved in the State of Campeche during AMLO’s term.
