Given the few visitors, they seek to increase promotion to attract more tourism.

Holbox reports changes in the arrival of tourists and, before the arrival of the summer holidays, maintain occupancy rates of less than 50%, which is why they are increasing their promotion because European tourism is their main market.

Cristian Stenta, vice president of the Holbox Hotel Association, explained that they have reported low rates because even the Olympics in Paris, France, could affect them. They could spend July and August with no more than 85% occupancy rates.

“It is necessary to reinforce the promotion to attract even more visitors to the island, thereby recovering daily occupancy above 80%, which means having between 1,000 and 1,500 daily passengers,” he explained.

To this end, they signed an agreement with Autobuses de Oriente (ADO), which in their new units includes the whale shark, which is emblematic of the island, in addition to the promotion that will be made of the destination, thereby reinforcing the arrival of tourists for the coming months.

In addition, they will be attending the tourist fairs in the coming months as a destination, one of the most important in London to capture the markets of the old continent.

“This year we did not attend the Tianguis Turístico in Acapulco, however in the Mexican Caribbean pavilion, they were wondering about the destination. That is why, working hand in hand with the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council, we are now looking for actions that lead to attracting more tourists,” she explained.

Holbox is a destination of nature and relaxation, thus promoting the island that now has attractions such as swimming with the whale shark, bioluminescence, and being free of sargassum, in addition to the fact that in recent months there have been sightings of flamingos.

They have an offer of 110 hotels with 1,700 rooms, with 80% of international visitors, predominantly French, German, and Spanish, to name a few, and only 20% are national.
