The archaeological site of Calakmul, in Campeche, in the southeast of Mexico, registers an increase in tourists arriving by the Tren Maya to learn the secrets of the Kingdom of the Serpent and other findings of the Mayan culture in the Museum of Edzná Site.
Nestled in the Mayan jungle and located 55 kilometers from the capital of Campeche, the site will exhibit new findings derived from the construction of the Tren Maya and the main monuments found in the last 50 years in the archaeological zone, which have become attractive to tourists.
We have 14 stelae from various periods, mainly from the Late Classic to the Early Classic when the Mayans erected most of the monuments that tell the life and historical events of some of its rulers, said archaeologist Adriana Velázquez Morlet, director of the INAH Campeche Center.
Inaugurated on June 28, the venue complements the cultural offering of the Edzná archaeological zone by exhibiting 1,663 pieces, some found in work, part of the Archaeological Zone Improvement Program (Promeza).
The Museum also has pottery found during the construction of a hotel near the archaeological site, as well as new information about the region, he added.
The new site also has replicas and graphic elements of the architecture of the archaeological site of Edzná and its diverse styles ranging from El Petén, Chenes, Río Bec to Puuc.
After visiting the Museum, tourists can tour the majestic pre-Columbian city from 400 to 1,000 AD. It was a relevant capital where elite women had a crucial role.
On the other hand, Irma Cantún Mata, in charge of the archaeological zone of Edzná, a Chontal Mayan word that means House or place of the Itzá, explained that the 22 buildings on the site combine various architectural styles embodied in majestic monuments and structures.
