With the beautiful beach of the traditional Malecón as a backdrop, this morning, Mayor Roger Gómez Ortegón received the fifth “Blue Flag” certification in favor of Progreso, corresponding to the 2024-2025 season; recognition granted by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and which reaffirms the prestige of the port as an important tourist destination in Yucatán.

During a presentation ceremony, the mayor received the distinction from Mr. Diego Díaz Hernández, Director of Operations and Finance of the FEE, who attended on behalf of the executive director, Mr. Joaquín Arturo Díaz Ríos.

This event was also attended by Mr. Raúl Alejandro Paz Noriega, General Director of SEFOTUR, representing the Governor of the State, Mauricio Vila Dosal.

Gómez Ortegón, like both representatives, highlighted the importance of this distinction that will continue to give greater tourist promotion to Progreso and, at the same time, more opportunities, more projects, and investments.

In addition, the mayor thanked all the City Hall staff who contributed to complying with the sustainability parameters necessary to maintain this certification for the fifth consecutive year.

As is known, the beaches that obtain the Blue Flag distinction must comply with four criteria: water quality, information and environmental education, safety, and services, as well as environmental management and handling.

Therefore, residents of Progreso and tourists will be assured that both the water and the sand of the port beach have all the hygiene conditions, according to the FEE guidelines.

Also present at this event were the local deputy for the ninth district, Erick Rihani González; the naval captain Armando Licea Escobedo, director of the Naval Hospital and representative of the thirtieth Naval Zone; as well as the municipal directors Ali Yamil Dib Muñoz, of Cadastre and Zofemat; Luis Alberto García Barroso, of Tourism, and the president of the National Chamber of Commerce, Services and Tourism (Canaco Servytur) of Progreso, Manuel Contreras Alcalá.
